Mandi is widely known as "Chotti Kashi" due to its striking similarity to Varanasi, featuring beautiful Ghats along the banks of the Beas River and numerous temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Often described as the cultural capital of Himachal Pradesh, Mandi boasts a rich heritage of traditions, culture, and temple architecture. In ancient times, it served as a vital business hub on the historic silk route to Tibet and a prominent center for cultural exchange.
As the sacred abode of Baba Bhoot Nath, the town was historically known as Mandavya Nagari, named after Mandav Rishi who meditated on the Kolsara rock in the Beas River. The town truly comes alive during the famous International Shivratri Fair celebrated every year in February or March, when deities from all corners of the district throng the town. The people of Mandi are celebrated for their liveliness and a distinct lifestyle deeply embedded in faith and tradition.
